The Big Eddy Camping Trip

The Big Eddy trip is a key element of the highly successful middle school experience at East Grand School in which students are taught practical skills and strategies for success in social and academic learning. Throughout the year students take part in various outdoor experiences in which they learn critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills. The trip starts the year on a high note.

Basic Itinerary:

Day 1: Depart EG mid-day, bus transit, set up camp, supper, campfire

Day 2: Breakfast, outdoor program 1, lunch, outdoor program 2, supper, campfire

Day 3: Depart camp, white water rafting, lunch, return to EG

The program activities vary from year to year, but some may include:

Hiking

  • Rainbow Loop Trail

  • Ice Caves Trail

  • Blueberry Ledges Trail

Boating

  • Lake canoeing

  • White water play boats

Fishing

  • Introduction to fishing skills

  • Fly fishing

The Big Eddy campground is located off the Golden Road north of Millinocket on the West Branch of the Penobscot River near Baxter State Park.

The trip takes place during the week just before school starts for the fall.
