The Maine Outdoor Economy Summit was amazing! Great
discussions on essential topics impacting Maine's outdoor
industry in the areas of economic development, workforce,
access, and equity such as "Preparing The Next Generation
of Outdoor Leaders in Rural Maine". Congratulations Korah
Soll - Rural Aspirations Project, Angela Cowger (and her
daughter) - East Grand School ELO Coordinator, and Tammi
Matula - East Grand School Educator.
Over the past 20 years, the East Grand School has
developed an impressive outdoor education program that
invites all students, k-12, to develop exemplary outdoor
leadership and stewardship skills, from basic survival skills
to whitewater canoeing to moose hunting. Students and
teachers utilize the plethora of natural assets in their region
and beyond to enhance learning across all content areas. In
this session, participants will learn how the faculty and
community partners have worked together to design and
implement diverse programming that encourages outdoor
learning, crosses subjects and grades, and eventually leads
students toward a clearly defined natural resource pathway
in high school that prepares students to sit for their
Recreational Maine Guide license upon graduation.

Tom Farr, of Tom Farr and Associates, is donating his time and expertise to train East Grand students to handle medical emergencies, once again this year. Over the course of the year, the upper level high school physical education students will be trained in wilderness first aid, while the outdoor education students will be trained in both wilderness first aid, as well as advanced first aid through ASHI. Tom's approach is to keep the training practical and as hands on as possible. He plans to incorporate a number of scenarios where students will need to assess and treat victims in an outdoor setting. Because it will span the course of the year, students will have multiple exposures to assessment opportunities as well as chances to demonstrate proficiency in a number of medical skills. This will allow students the opportunity to adequately digest and internalize the needed skills.
Because of our rural setting, students are all first responders and it is important that they are trained to help prevent and respond to medical emergencies and trauma. Additionally, we have a number of students that love to take advantage of outdoor activities, and most likely will encounter a situation where medical care is needed over the course of their lifetime.

Note to parents: Students who do not ride the bus are not dismissed until after the busses are released. If they do come out of the building prior to the busses being dismissed, they will need to wait until we dismiss the busses to go to their vehicles or walk home. This is for safety reasons. We thank you for your support in keeping ALL of our students safe.

We here at East Grand Schools have a long history of pride in our Vikings and would love to rekindle a
more hand-in-hand relationship with the community. Let’s get together and discuss the formation of a
brand new East Grand Parent Advisory Team! This team would be comprised of volunteers from the
community and would work with administration at our school to discuss and help to develop policies
and procedures, raise funds for things that fall outside of the budget of the school, and so much more!
Together, we can make a difference!
This meeting will take place at the East Grand School Cafeteria, October 5 th , 2023, at 5:30 pm. Please
come with ideas, questions and concerns about this club and its role in our students’ lives.
